The problem
Unstable temperatures, moisture and rear panel ice buildup.
The repair
Replaced evaporator, filter-dryer, and capillary tube
The result
Normal temperatures and uniform frost pattern
Customer Complaint and Possible Causes
The refrigerator section was not working right with unstable temperature readings and ice building up on the rear panel. These symptoms usually point to a cooling system problem, such as restriction, luck of refrigerant or a defrost issue inside the compartment.
Diagnosis and Findings
We checked the stored thermistor history in the control board memory, which showed unstable temperatures swinging up and down over the last few hours. We noticed ice buildup on the rear panel of the refrigerator compartment, while the freezer temperatures stayed completely normal. Error code 40 (40EC, 40 1 40) for excessive refrigerator run time popped up in diagnostics mode. After removing the interior panel, we found the definitive cause: the refrigerator evaporator had a restriction. We also paid attention that the condenser coil was covered with dust.
Repair Performed
We replaced the refrigerator evaporator, filter-dryer, and capillary tube, and then recharged the sealed system. We also cleaned the dirty condenser coil to help the system work better.
Verification and Outcome
We tested the unit after the repair and confirmed that temperatures returned to normal with no ice or snow forming. The evaporator coil showed a nice, flat frost pattern.
